Choosing the Best Electric Wheelchair

by Susan R. Love

The most important things to consider when selecting an electric wheel chair is both where the wheel chair is going to be used and by whom. Bariatic wheelchairs are available, as are power wheelchairs with either mid or rear wheels.

Rear wheel wheelchairs are sturdier and tend to run faster than other types of electric wheel chairs. They can reach speeds of up to six mph and they are less likely to tip over under extreme conditions. Thus, a rear wheel wheelchair, such as the Drive Geo Power Wheelchair, is perfect for those live or work in fast paced environments. Pride Mobility and Drive Medical both make high-quality rear wheel wheelchairs.

If your senior parent needs to be able to maneuver in small places, such as an apartment or tight office, a mid-wheel power wheelchair is probably best. It has the smallest turning radius, between 24 and 26 inches, which is seven inches smaller than the most compact rear wheel. This type of electric wheelchair is not ideal for going over bumpy terrain though, as the chair can get stuck on the front or rear casters, preventing the middle drive wheels from touching the ground. However, the more compact size makes mid-wheel wheel chairs ideal for many users. The Golden Compass and Pride Jazzy Select are both popular options.

Portable wheelchairs are another popular option, especially for those who travel a great deal. For seniors who often commute, perhaps between the home, office, and various social gatherings, it is crucial to have a wheel chair that can be easily transported. Since they are lightweight, it is easier to lift the chair between the ground and the trunk of a car. Plus, this weight difference means that fewer people are needed to lift the chair. If lifting a full chair is still a challenge, however, some brands do offer chairs, such as the Jazzy 1107 Transportable Power Wheelchair, that can be easily disassembled.

Electric wheelchairs come in many different styles, with a multitude of different features. Thus, there really is something for everyone. Purchasing a power wheel chair can greatly improve your loved one\’s quality of life and give him the freedom he desires. Being able to move from one location to another without help is something most of us take for granted. By purchasing an electric wheelchair for your loved one, you can help him restore his sense of independence.
